Lions don’t scare Winnie the Pooh!
Five hundred under-privileged children enjoyed the rare treat of watching a rollicking “Winnie the Pooh” show at the Hippodrome, Gold Reef City, in September. The Hippodrome invited Lions Clubs in the area to create an opportunity for the children to come to the show. Terry Ruddy of the Krugersdorp Lions Club coordinated the effort.
Children arrived in buses and kombis and each received a goody bag before they entered the Hippodrome. Then the show started to the delight of the audience. Winnie the Pooh and his friends, including the five-and-a-half-year old Christopher Robin, had everybody laughing and cheering, and sometimes gasping!
The children were held spell-bound and were quite disappointed when the show ended “too soon”. But as they emerged into the afternoon sunlight, there was a buzz of excited talk about what they saw. It is a day that they will long remember.
The Lions is an international organisation with the aim to serve their community. In Krugersdorp they are actively involved with instances like Yususf Dadoo and Sterkfontein Hospitals, under-privileged children, senior citizens and services like eye-testing and providing reading glasses to people who cannot afford it.
